Mr Men Little Miss Movie in the Works: StudioCanal, Heyday & Sanrio Unite for Global Family Film (2025)

Bold claim: a beloved British children’s franchise is about to leap from page to screen with blockbuster potential. Studiocanal and Heyday Films, who previously teamed up on the highly successful Paddington series, are partnering again to develop a feature film adaptation of Mr. Men Little Miss. This collaboration aims to bring Roger Hargreaves’s iconic characters to the big screen for the first time, targeting audiences of both children and adults worldwide.

The production team has brought Mister Men Limited, a Sanrio Group company, on board to help shape the project. The goal is to mirror the timeless appeal of the books, which have captivated readers for over five decades. The Mr. Men and Little Miss library, originally published as Mr. Men starting in 1971 and expanded with Little Miss in 1981, has sold more than 250 million copies. The characters—each defined by a single dominant trait—have become enduring pop-culture icons. Examples include Little Miss Helpful, who means well yet causes chaos; Mr. Happy, ever optimistic; Little Miss Sunshine, who brightens any situation; Mr. Tickle, with extraordinarily long arms who enjoys making others laugh; Mrs. Grumpy, perpetually irritated; and Little Miss Naughty, a playful rascal. In France, Mr. Men Little Miss is the top-selling children’s book series, and it remains one of the UK’s most successful preschool brands.

Since its acquisition by Sanrio in 2011, the franchise has expanded beyond publishing into fashion, health and beauty, and toys, among other areas. Sanrio, known for Hello Kitty, has broadened the Mr. Men Little Miss universe to include more than 90 characters, with special editions inspired by cultural figures and a global fan base across the UK, France, Australia, and Asia, among others.

The film will build on an animated Mr. Men Little Miss series currently streaming on YouTube and a second animated series in production for television. Like Paddington, the feature aims to balance humor, personality, and warmth while inviting new audiences to discover the characters.

Adam Hargreaves, son of the late Roger Hargreaves, expressed excitement about the project: “It’s amazing to think that Mr Men and Little Miss are getting their own film. My father would be thrilled, and I’m proud of his creation reaching the big screen. It’s a significant step up for Mr Small.”

Heyday Films’ David Heyman, known for his work on the Harry Potter series and Barbie, emphasized the opportunity: “The globally beloved Mr Men and Little Miss books offer an irresistible canvas for a bold and imaginative feature.” He also noted the collaboration with Studiocanal and Sanrio on what promises to be a captivating new chapter in the Mr Men and Little Miss universe.

Anna Marsh, Studiocanal’s CEO, Canal+’s COO and deputy CEO, expressed delight at partnering with Heyday and Sanrio to bring Roger Hargreaves’s iconic characters to the big screen for the first time. She called it an incredible privilege and a chance to deliver joy, mischief, and adventure to audiences worldwide.

Tomokuni Tsuji, president and CEO of Sanrio Co., Ltd., highlighted the collaboration as a way to introduce one of Sanrio’s strongest IPs to a global audience through film. Sanrio’s leadership emphasized that Mr. Men Little Miss, with its vast cast, would continue to spread happiness while supporting Studiocanal and Heyday Films’ creative aspirations.

Studiocanal and Heyday Films boast a strong track record in premium family entertainment. The Paddington franchise has earned Emmy recognition for its animated series and achieved three successful big-screen entries, with Paddington in Peru released in 2024. The Paddington stage adaptation, Paddington The Musical, is currently previewing in London’s West End with support from Studiocanal. There are also reports that Studiocanal is developing a Paddington animated feature alongside plans for a fourth film in the series.

Production executives Ron Halpern (EVP of Global Production) and Joe Naftalin (SVP of Global Production and Head of UK Film Production) will oversee the Mr Men Little Miss feature for Studiocanal. This project represents another milestone in the studio’s ongoing effort to expand its premier family entertainment slate.
