Healthcare professionals demand a drastic overhaul of Manx Care's management!
In a bold move, the Isle of Man Medical Society (IOMMS) has proposed a significant downsizing of Manx Care's management structure, advocating for a 60% reduction in roles. But here's the catch: they want to reallocate those resources to enhance clinical and support services. This proposal comes as a response to an independent review examining the relationship between the government's Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and Manx Care.
The IOMMS's initial response to the review validated concerns about governance issues within the healthcare organization. They believe the current healthcare model is inadequate, and their new proposals aim to revolutionize Manx Care's governance. The society's report has already reached the Members of Tynwald, advocating for a governance shift towards clinical leadership, transparency, and accountability.
One of the key suggestions is to shake up the Manx Care Board. They propose that the chair and vice-chair be elected from the House of Keys, with a majority of non-executive roles filled by island residents. This local representation is an intriguing twist, potentially fostering a deeper connection between the healthcare system and the community.
The creation of a Professional Executive Committee (PEC) is another notable proposal. This committee would integrate clinical and operational expertise into Manx Care's decision-making, providing a direct channel for frontline professionals to influence planning, quality, and service improvements. And here's where it gets controversial: the IOMMS suggests that members of the PEC should be elected, not appointed, to ensure professional and democratic accountability.
This committee would represent a diverse range of healthcare professionals, operational managers, and even patient or community members. It would also establish subcommittees focusing on quality, safety, workforce culture, finance, resources, and innovation. The PEC's quarterly reports to the Board would cover various aspects, ensuring a comprehensive overview of Manx Care's performance and challenges.
The IOMMS believes this new structure would establish a 'governance triangle,' fostering independent accountability and improved organizational culture. But will this radical restructuring truly deliver safer and more effective care? That's the question on everyone's mind.
